Half the world may still be racked by recession and austerity, but nobody told the art collectors. At two sales in New York, buyers have spent more than $1bn (£620m) on postwar and contemporary paintings and sculptures, setting new world records for the most valuable work of art ever sold at auction, the most valuable work by a living artist ever sold at auction, and the highest auction total in art market history.

"I love the art market," said Melanie Gerlis, London-based art market editor of the Art Newspaper. "But even I am struggling to see how paintings can be worth this amount of money. This is billionaires having fun. Art, essentially, has become the accepted elevating hobby of the super-rich. It's a lot more sophisticated than a yacht."

On Tuesday, Three Studies of Lucian Freud, a 1969 triptych by Francis Bacon, sold at Christie's after a furious six-minute bidding war for $142.4m, some $20m more than the previous record for a work of art at auction, achieved by Edvard Munch's The Scream at Sotheby's last year. The same sale saw a Jeff Koons sculpture, Balloon Dog, change hands for $58.4m – $20m more than anyone has ever paid before at auction for a work by a living artist – and set further world auction records for another eight artists, including Willem de Kooning and Lucio Fontana.

In all, three works sold for more than $50m, 16 for more than $10m and 56 for more than $1m.

On Wednesday, Sotheby's set new world auction records for seven more artists, including Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol, whose 1963 painting Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster), consisting of two panels depicting the aftermath of a car crash, fetched $105m, smashing the previous auction record for a Warhol – set in 2007 – by more than $30m.

Gerlis said the prices being paid for top works were being driven largely by new and generally anonymous buyers, particularly from Asia, the Middle East and Russia. These, said Gerlis, were "the top 1% of the top 1%, for whom austerity has clearly never hit. But this has no rational investment basis whatsoever. Other assets are just a bit boring".

Some more traditional artworld members plainly do not appreciate the avalanche of new money. "I'm an art collector," the former Hollywood agent turned Silicon Valley dealmaker Michael Ovitz said after the Sotheby's sale. "This is not about collecting. For a moment last night I thought I was in the commodities market."

Although the buyers of some works, such as the Bacon triptych, were identified as New York galleries, Gerlis said it would "not be them paying with their own money. Goodness knows who the actual buyer is".

In the auction house reports, buyers are described as "international trade", "anonymous", "Asian trade" or simply "US private". Dealers and market insiders have also said that, besides billionaires trophy-hunting for their private vanity museums, a rash of new and often state-backed museums across China and the Gulf states – particularly Qatar – have contributed to the surge.

Matthew Paton at Christie's insisted it was not just the very top end of the market that was booming. Sales of all works at the 250-year-old auction house surged by 10% last year to nearly $6.3bn, helped by nearly 700 works that fetched more than $1m and 50 that went for more than $10m. This year's figures are 9% up on last year.

"It is the monster, ginormous sales that make all the headlines," Paton said. "And it is extraordinary when you think about it: there were six people bidding more than $100m for the Bacon on Tuesday night. We've also seen an enormous increase in the depth of people wanting to buy at above $20m."

According to Paton, Christie's is seeing a growing global demand for art at all price levels. The market is expanding geographically: auctions are being hosted for the first time in Shanghai and Mumbai, and the number of Asian buyers soared by 15% last year.

But new, more modest buyers are also making their presence felt at the traditional venues. At recent auctions of works under $100,000, Paton said, more than 50% of purchasers were first-time buyers, while online-only auctions also attract more than 40% novices.

New York/Hamburg - Neuer Rekord für ein Gemälde des Pop-Art-Künstlers Andy Warhol: Bei einer Versteigerung in New York erzielte sein Bild "Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)" am Mittwoch (Ortszeit) mehr als 105 Millionen Dollar (78 Millionen Euro), wie das Auktionshaus Sotheby's mitteilte. Es ist damit das bisher teuerste Werk des 1987 gestorbenen US-Künstlers. Der bisherige Auktionsrekord für ein Warhol-Bild lag nach Angaben von Sotheby's bei 71,7 Millionen Dollar.

Das Bild "Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)" ist 2,67 Meter hoch und vier Meter breit. Auf der linken Seite sind 15 Siebdrucke eines Verkehrsunfalls zu sehen, die rechte Seite zeigt eine leere, silberfarbene Fläche. Das Bild stammt aus Warhols Serie "Death and Disaster" ("Tod und Katastrophen") von 1963. Die drei anderen Bilder aus der Serie hängen in Museen in den USA, in Österreich und der Schweiz. "Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)" wurde in den vergangenen 26 Jahren dagegen nur ein einziges Mal öffentlich ausgestellt.

Es ist erst das fünfte Bild in der Auktionsgeschichte, das für mehr als 100 Millionen Dollar verkauft wurde. Zuletzt hatten sich drei Bieter gegenseitig hochgetrieben. An wen das Bild letztlich ging, ist nicht bekannt.

Der bisherige Auktionsrekord für ein Warhol-Werk lag bei 71,7 Millionen Dollar. Dafür war im Mai 2007 "Green Car Crash - Green Burning Car I" verkauft worden. Es zeigt wie das jetzige Rekordbild einen Autounfall, nur in Grün statt in Silber.

"Es ist die ultimative Trophäenjagd"

Tobias Meyer, Chef für moderne Kunst bei Sotheby's, verglich das Bild gar mit Pablo Picassos "Guernica" und Théodore Géricaults "Floß der Medusa". Arbeiten Warhols, der Kunst wie am Fließband produzierte, sind nach einer Durststrecke mittlerweile wieder sehr gefragt.

Der Kunstmarkt ist extrem launisch, und der Verkauf von "Warhols" ist erst recht unberechenbar. "Liz #1", ein buntes Porträt von Elizabeth Taylor, wurde nur Minuten nach dem Rekord-Warhol mit 20,3 Millionen Dollar nur zum untersten Preis der geschätzten Spanne verkauft. Am Tag zuvor hatte ein Bild des Künstlers, das an ein Werbeplakat für Coca-Cola erinnerte, bei Christie's immerhin fast 60 Millionen Dollar gebracht, war dabei aber auch innerhalb der Erwartungen geblieben. Andere "Warhols" bleiben dagegen sogar liegen und finden gar keinen Käufer.

Nur einen Tag zuvor hatte ein Werk des britischen Malers Francis Bacon den weltweit höchsten Auktionserlös für ein Kunstwerk erzielt. Das aus drei Gemälden bestehende Triptychon "Drei Studien von Lucian Freud" wurde am Dienstag in New York bei Christie's für 142,4 Millionen Dollar versteigert und übertraf damit Edvard Munchs berühmtes Gemälde "Der Schrei", das im Mai 2012 bei einer Auktion 119,9 Millionen Dollar eingebracht hatte.

Noch mehr Geld brachte 2011 ein Gemälde aus Paul Cézannes Serie "Die Kartenspieler" ein. Es fand für 259 Millionen Dollar einen neuen Besitzer - allerdings handelte es sich damals um einen Privatverkauf und nicht um eine Versteigerung.

"Die Nachfrage nach berühmten Werken historisch bedeutsamer Künstler ist fraglos groß", sagte der Londoner Kunstberater Michael Frahm. "Es ist die ultimative Trophäenjagd."

UNE BELLE HISTOIRE

Trois études de Lucian Freud, de Bacon, avait une belle histoire : outre qu'elle est une des rares à représenter son ami, et parfois rival, les trois panneaux du triptyque avaient à l'origine été vendus séparément par la Galleria Galatea de Turin. Un collectionneur italien avait passé vingt ans à réunir à nouveau les trois panneaux, avant de les céder à son tour. Selon Judd Tully, un des meilleurs journalistes spécialisés, l'œuvre était proposée à la vente en 2012 par la galerie Dickinson de Londres pour environ 100 millions de dollars, avant que le propriétaire – inconnu – ne se ravise et ne la propose à Christie's, qui l'aurait d'abord cédée en vente privée.

Puis, le nouvel acheteur aurait décidé de la passer aux enchères. La maison de vente a refusé de commenter. Mise à prix à 80 millions de dollars, la peinture a immédiatement été l'objet d'une bataille entre sept enchérisseurs, parmi lesquels le galeriste américain Larry Gagosian qui, petit bras, a abandonné à 101 millions de dollars. A 120 millions de dollars, ils étaient encore trois à se la disputer, jusqu'à ce que le marchand américain William Acquavella ne l'emporte, après dix minutes d'enchères, à 142,4 millions de dollars – probablement pour le compte d'un client qui souhaite rester anonyme.

Триптих Бэкона не составил исключение. За $58,4 млн. пошла стальная скульптура Джеффа Кунса «Воздушная собака». Это был оранжевый вариант. Дело в том, что существует пять вариантов этой «Собаки». Все они имеют разные цвета. Миллиардер Коэн владеет «собакой» желтого цвета», лос-анджелесский финансист Брод – синей, хозяин самого аукционного дома «Кристис» Пино — фиалетового цвета и, наконец, греческий магнат Еоанноу — красной.

А как вы думаете, сколько стоила бутылка «кока-колы», нарисованная Энди Уорхолом? Догадаться не мудрено. Она стоила $57,2 млн! Нарисовал эту бутылку художник в 1961 году.

Ожесточенная битва разгорелась и вокруг картины Ротко под названием «Номер 11 (без названия)». Это одно из абстрактных полотен художника, написанное им в 1957 году. Его продали наследники Брюса Вассерштейна, финансиста, который умер в 2009 году. Купил Ротко манхэттенский дилер Веге за $46 млн. Он же купил «Апокалипсис сейчас», знаменитую картину художника Вула, работы, которого, кстати, экспонируются сейчас в музее Гугенхайма.

После завершения аукциона Дюсси Пилккенен, глава европейского департамента «Кристис» и аукционер вчерашнего шоу отметил, что аукцион носил ярко выраженный интернациональный характер. Помимо американских толстосумов в нем принимали участие и российские азиатские, европейские и китайские магнаты. «Но игроков из нового мира было больше, чем раньше и никогда еще раньше люди не тратили так часто деньги за картины, цены которых превышали $20 млн. Но, — предупредил он в заключении, — для успешной продажи необходимо иметь материал».
