「 阿里山 」 之名稱由來，至今仍沒有一個明確的說法。據清代 《諸羅縣志》的風俗志番俗考中記載：「阿里山離縣治十里許，山廣而深峻，番剽悍 …… 」但沒有確切指明阿里山的位置。日人安倍明義認為阿里山的名稱難明，但他推測諸羅平埔族人與鳳山平埔族語音相近，鳳山平埔族稱該地山區生番為「 Karii 」 ( 意為傀儡 ) ，諸羅平埔族也以同音稱呼該地之生番，後來因方言變化而失去 K 的子音，遂訛轉為「 Arii 」 ( 阿里 ) ；光復後所修的《嘉義縣志》土地志中則說：「康熙 56 年 ( 西元 1717 年 ) 所修諸羅縣志山川，已有阿里山之名稱。」阿里山鄉柳竹青云：阿里山本狩獵地區，相傳昔日山胞首領名阿里，遂將此獵區稱為阿里山。」 * * 海國圖索 ----- 台灣自然地理開發 (1895-1945)----- 台灣影像歷史 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The derivation of the name “Ali Mountains” still hasn’t been ascertained.
